150th Jubilee Mass on Founder's Day

Notre Dame High School celebrated Founder’s Day on January 6, 2026, with an All-School Mass commemorating the arrival of the Dominican Sisters of St. Cecilia in Chattanooga, the founding moment of what would eventually become Notre Dame High School. This year’s Founder’s Day celebration also marked the beginning of a full year of activities honoring the school’s rich Dominican heritage and legacy.

The Mass was celebrated by Bishop Mark Beckman of the Diocese of Knoxville. Concelebrants and clergy in attendance included Msgr. Al Humbrecht; Fr. Mike Nolan '78; Fr. John Dowling; Fr. Christopher Manning; Fr. Peter Iorio '82; Fr. Joe McMahon '75; and Fr. A.J. Houston. Former Head of School Deacon Hicks Armor '70 was in attendance and assisted at Mass.

Prior to the Mass, Head of School Dr. Eric Shexnaildre '96 and Superintendent George Valadie '71, a former president of Notre Dame High School, offered remarks reflecting on the school’s history, mission, and enduring impact on the Chattanooga community.

Several members of the Knights of Columbus, led by Raleigh Cooper, attended in support of the celebration. The school was also honored by the presence of Dominican Sisters from the St. Cecilia Community in Nashville, including Sr. Anne Catherine, Sr. Mary Louis, Sr. Mary Jude, and Sr. Imelda '88, whose community continues to shape and guide the spiritual foundation of Notre Dame High School.  Mr. Perry Storey, who served as principal for 17 years, was in attendance along with several other former faculty members and alumni.

This meaningful celebration served as both a remembrance of the school’s beginnings and a joyful launch into a year dedicated to honoring Notre Dame’s past, present, and future.
