Acceptable Use of Computers and On-line Services

Students may use computers, networks and on-line services at school for learning activities in support of instructional objectives and for research supporting educational programs.

Unacceptable Use of Computers and On-line Services

Students may not use computers, networks and on-line services at school, specifically including, but not limited to, the following:

  • Damaging or altering the operation of network services, or interfering with other users’ ability to use network services including but not limited to hacking activities and creation/uploading of computer viruses
  • Creating, possessing or distributing communications, materials, information, data or images regarded as threatening, abusive, harassing, discriminatory, obscene, or in violation or inconsistent with any other school policy
  • Copying or downloading copyrighted materials without the owner’s permission
  • Representing as one’s own work any materials obtained on the Internet (such as research projects, essays, etc.)
  • Installing or maintaining any hardware or executable software not owned or licensed by the school. This includes software in the public domain or “shareware.”
  • Sharing passwords or using other users’ passwords without permission and/or accessing other users’ accounts
  • Using any services for non-school related purposes such as private financial gain, commercial, advertising or solicitation purposes, or for any other personal use
  • Accessing chat rooms or social networks without specific authorization from a supervising adult
  • Using e-mail except for educational purposes
  • Revealing full name, address or telephone number on the Internet without prior permission from a supervising adult.

No Expectation of Privacy

The school reserves the right to monitor all computer and Internet activity by students. Students have no expectations of privacy in their use of computers at school, including stored files.

Student User Expectations

As a user of the Notre Dame High School computers, networks, and on-line services or as a user of personal computers, wireless devices, networks or on-line services while on school premises, you are expected to comply with the school policy and its associated regulations as listed above. Please understand that disciplinary action may be taken for violations of this policy.
